Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial: Day 3
Day 3. Unfortunately sleeping is still very difficult, but I have not slept well in the last 3 and 1/2 years due to my pain. Quality of sleep is something that this trial hopes to improve, but with a small incision that you lay on, an abdominal binder to hold you leads and blisters from your wires; it’s hard to imagine sleep quality improving. The high frequency electrical stimulation takes several day to ‘build up on the nerve’ the Nevro Rep said. I look at it as reconditioning the nerve or quieting it down, mine has been distressed for a very long time.
I still have not seen any real improvements in any of my limitations. The spasms in my calf started after sitting for about 10 minutes today, the tingling turned into burning returned shortly after. Then a minute or two later my butt cheek followed in spasm. I tried to stay seated as long a I could, but again only a matter of minutes. All of my normal pain symptoms were there and with the same high intensity as before the device. I repeat this exercise as often as I can throughout the day to try to track any improvements.
At one point in the day, I was unsure if the stimulator was even working. Any improvement was minuscule, so I changed the settings on my controller to see if I noticed a difference. Then I turned it off to see it there was any change. There wasn’t so I put it back to it’s starting setting. The experiment only lasted 10-15 minutes and shouldn’t have effected things much.Either way my Rep wasn’t pleased. We decided to increase the intensity of the stimulation, so we changed to P1-7*.
Day 3 ends without much if any improvement. Only a minute or two on my sitting. It has been snowing for two days so walking has been out of the question.
*The Nevro Spinal Cord Stimulator is programmed at the hospital with several pre-set programs. There are three programs P1, P2, and P3. Each program targets the spinal cord differently. Each program also has seven different setting that adjust the intensity or strength of the program. So a program may be referred to as P2-5 is Program 2 at the 5th highest strength of signal.
