Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial: Day 6
Day 6, I finally slept. My pain was there, through my right leg and foot and is still making it difficult to sleep, as is the abdominal binder. I think exhaustion is why I was able fall asleep for much of the night. As I woke up the day seemed no different than the last few.
Since my SCS trial began we have had two snow storms that have dropped about 20 inches of snow on my home town of Norwood. The New England winter has limited my chances to test the device driving; nor have I been able to get really get outside and walk with the device. So my method of testing has been to see how it has improved my tolerance to sit in a chair. Today I sat for 30 minutes, I had pain but it was less intense than a few days ago. By the time I got up I was really in pain, but I sat in less pain for a longer period of time than I have in years. I was able to repeat this same test 3 more times each for 30 minutes, I sat for a total of 2 hours over the course of the day. Without Lidocaine patches. Without pain killers. I did need to take breaks, to walk around and even to lie down for a while to let my pain settle down. Today wasn’t life changing by any means, though it was encouraging to seem some improvements in both my endurance for sitting and my recovery time in between.
Today was hectic, I spoke with my Nevro Rep, he and the doctor decided that they wanted to do an X-ray. That it was possible one of my leads had moved, I couldn’t help but get anxious. While it was encouraging to have some improvements today it was also daunting to think of having to go in for x-rays and perhaps something is wrong. We decided to increase my settings tonight before bed to P2-7*.
SCS – Spinal Cord Stimulator
*The Nevro Spinal Cord Stimulator is programmed at the hospital with several pre-set programs. There are three programs P1, P2, and P3. Each program targets the spinal cord differently. Each program also has seven different setting that adjust the intensity or strength of the program. So a program may be referred to as P2-5 is Program 2 at the 5th highest strength of signal.
